CONCORD, N.C. (July 29, 2014) - Six champions were crowned at the final round of the 21st Annual Jack in the Box Summer Shootout Series, Tuesday. Daniel Hemric, Joshua Brimecombe, Tom Pistone and Carson Ferguson were among the season champions at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
Hemric, of Kannapolis, N.C., capped the series with his sixth Legend Car Pro division win of the season, charging through the field to claim the lead by lap seven. He didn't look back, leading the rest of the way to drive away from second place William Byron. Joey Padgett led briefly in the early laps, but fell to third, Kason Plott finished fourth, and Jordan Black took the checkers in fifth.
Hemric had a 29-point lead heading into the feature race over Plott and clinched his third Pro division championship when he started the feature race.
Ferguson entered the Legend Car Young Lions division race with a 52-point lead and left with both a victory in the night's race and the division championship. Ferguson, of Charlotte, N.C., sparred with Matt Thomas for first place during the first half of the 20-lap race but eventually took over the top spot on lap 8 and stayed there until the end of the race. A wreck in the back of the field marred the last lap of the race but came after Ferguson had already crossed the finish line and taken the championship.
The Quaker Steak and Lube Legend Car Semi-Pro race was the tightest points competition of the night with three possible champions going into the race. Devin O'Connell led the division by only five points at the start of the night, with Brimecombe and Dillon Faggart close behind. Faggart, of Concord, N.C., took the checkered flag but it wasn't quite enough to edge out Brimecombe, also of Concord, N.C., who finished third and ultimately won the division championship.
In other Legend Car action, Robby Faggart claimed his first win of the season in the Security Force Legend Car Masters division while Tom Pistone, of Mooresville, N.C., who won seven of ten races, finished third and won his second division championship in a row.
Chase Purdy recorded his second win of the season in the Bandolero Outlaws feature race. Purdy, a Meridian, Mississippi native, took the lead from Kamera McDonald on lap 3 and never looked back, extending his race lead to over one second on lap 8 by recording the fastest lap split of the race with 18.398. Austin Powell ran in the top-five for all 20 laps, but couldn't catch Purdy, finishing in second by 0.436 seconds for his eighth top-five finish of the season.
Jensen Jorgensen, a Stockbridge, Georgia native, began the race with a 17-point lead over Powell in the overall standings and finished in fourth place to capture his first championship at the Jack in the Box Summer Shootout Series. Jorgensen tallied three wins on the season and averaged a 4.4 place finish throughout the season.
In the LiveWell Homes Bandolero Bandits feature, DJ Canipe, of Fallston, N.C., ruined Chandler Smith's pursuit of perfection, claiming the win in the Round 10 for his first victory of the season. Smith, a Jasper, Georgia, native, started the race 54 points in front of Canipe, but his second place finish solidified the points championship for the 12 year-old.
George Hayes, a Union City, Pennsylvania native, claimed his first career Summer Shootout Series Bandolero Beginner Bandits victory. The Beginner Bandits do not race for points, so no champion was crowned in that division.
Championship point standings are unofficial pending post-race inspection and point tabulation by race officials.
During Monday night Jack in the Box Summer Shootout Series competition, Byron picked up his second win this season in the Legend Car Pro division, beating a hard-charging Hemric. O'Connell also won for the second time in the Quaker Steak & Lube Legend Car Semi-Pro division. Veteran driver John Sossoman won for the first time this season in the Security Force Legend Car Masters division. Ferguson continued to dominate the Legend Car Young Lions division with his seventh win of the Summer Shootout Series.
In Bandolero competition on Monday, Smith remained undefeated in the LiveWell Homes Bandit division, Ashton Winger took the checkers in the Outlaw division and Isabella Robusto won the Beginner Bandit feature.
