CONCORD, N.C. (June 10, 2014) - Summer storms cut short the wild action on Tuesday night during week one of the 21st annual Jack in the Box Summer Shootout Series at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Tom Pistone, Riley Halverson and Carson Ferguson picked up wins during the weather-shortened show.
Tim Farrar, principal of Northwest Cabarrus Middle School, raced his way to the win in the Principal School Bus Slobberknocker. Defending winner Darin Roberts was unable to get his bus moving.
After an exciting last lap battle, Adam Auerbach, of Wolf Meadow Elementary School made contact with another bus and ended up rolling the heavy machine on its side in turn 3 to end the race.
Farrar did his best Ricky Bobby impression after taking the checkered flag, rolling around in the infield grass.
"I headed to the infield to travel across, and I thought about nothing but Ricky Bobby. So we had to do a Ricky Bobby thing to celebrate this win with the Northwest fans," said Farrar. "We look forward to it every year. It's a great time had by all, and my staff enjoys coming out along with my students."
Tom Pistone, of Mooresville, N.C., reigned victorious in tonight's rough and tumble Security Force Legend Car Masters division 25-lap feature race, which was marred by six total cautions. After a four-car inversion, Robby Faggart led the beginning of the race with Pistone starting seventh. Faggart spun out on lap three, sending him to the rear and resulting in a caution. John Sossoman and Scott Whittaker led the restart but Whittaker tapped Sossoman in the shuffle, sending the race back into another caution. Sossoman restarted in the lead, followed by Pistone and Whittaker. Pistone fought Sossoman hard for the lead and ultimately took the top spot before another caution was on lap ten.
Despite several more cautions and a hard-fought battle from Sossoman to reclaim first, Pistone managed to keep his spot as the leader for the remainder of the race. Sossoman followed in second, Bruce Silver took third, Whittaker landed in fourth and Robbie Woodall finished fifth.
Polesitter Halverson, of Concord, N.C., took home the Quaker Steak and Lube Legend Car Semi Pro division feature race victory. With the track still wet from a rain shower earlier in the night, drivers had just 25 laps to reach the checkered flag. Robby Lyons and Devin O'Connell brought out caution flags on back-to-back laps with just five laps to go. Halverson only trailed for half a lap all night after getting briefly passed by Connor Pyle on lap 21. Sheldon Crouse took advantage on a spin out by Pyle and race to second place finish with a race-best 17.455 second split on the final lap.
After starting in the 11th position, Josh Turner weaved his way up to a third-place finish. Billy Webb also took advantage late, moving into a fourth-place finish on the final lap. Rounding out the top-five was Josh Brimecombe who finished 2.057 seconds back.
Ferguson, of Concord, N.C., also picked up his second win on Tuesday night in the Legend Car Young Lions division.
On Monday night, during the first round of competition, Daniel Hemric, of Kannapolis, N.C., took the Legend Car Pro win, Pistone won in the Security Force Legend Car Masters division, Ferguson won the Legend Car Young Lions feature and Dylan Faggart, of Concord, N.C., won the Quaker Steak and Lube Legend Car Semi Pro Division. In Bandolero racing, Miguel Cesar won the Bandolero Outlaws feature, Chandler Smith won in the LiveWell Homes Bandolero Bandits, and Cameron Bolton won the Bandolero Beginner Bandits feature race.
