Bourgoine Becomes Three Time Champion after Win at Thunder Finale
Story by Matt Grant
August 14, 2014
Scarborough, ME - After rain washed out the events at last week's Thursday Thunder, the Amsoil NELCAR Legends Tour drivers were eager to get back behind the wheel and finish out the mid-week series on a positive note. Mathew Bourgoine came into the race with an 18 point lead over Reid Lanpher and 26 points over Kevin Girard Jr.
Ed Getty in the 10 and Alan Smith in the 33 paced the 13 car field to the green flag for the 25 lapper. Getty put his familiar yellow sedan in the lead for the opening laps, until he surrendered it on lap six to the 38 of Mathew Bourgoine, who blasted by the pack on the outside line. Not far behind him was the 29 of Trevor Sanborn, a veteran of super late model racing, who also used the outside to his advantage. The caution flew on lap 15 for a spin on the frontstretch by the 72 of Mike Humphrey, and at the same time, a mechanical failure on Sanborn's machine forced an early and disappointing end to his night.
Bourgoine continued to dominate after the green flag racing resumed, and looked just as untouchable as he has all year. Reid Lanpher in the 59 eventually found his way through traffic, and closed the gap to Bourgoine, but didn't quite have enough to make a move for the lead.
Mathew Bourgoine took the checkered flag for the sixth time in eight races, capping off his third straight Thursday Thunder Championship in style! Reid Lanpher finished in the runner up spot, followed by the 399 of Bob Weymouth 3rd, the 19 of Kevin Girard Jr. 4th, and the 10 of Ed Getty 5th. Mike Humphrey in the 72 collected the Thursday Thunder Rookie of the Year honors after an 8th place finish in the points standings.
Another exciting season of Thursday Thunder is in the books, and we can only hope for some more great racing next summer!
The Tour will make its first ever stop at Spud Speedway in Caribou, Northern Maine's Center of Speed. With none of the drivers having prior experience on the track, it should be one of the more interesting events to say the least!
