CPC Legends Have Another Exciting Weekend

Mid-Wales father-and-son motorsport team Guttercrest Racing has been working flat-out to repair damage sustained in an action-packed meeting at Mallory Park last week.

Ben Power’s Legend car was badly damaged in the second race, when a collision between two other cars ended up taking him backwards into the fence.

This week, the race has been on to get the car back in top condition before the trip to Lydden Hill in Kent at the weekend (June 26th).

In the first race, he had done well to finish fourth after recovering from a trip to the gravel trap.

Guest driver, rally star Mark Higgins, drove a steady first race from the back of the grid to finish 14th, and placed third in heat two – after lying second for much of the race.

Heavy rain for the final hindered the three-times British rally champion, whose car was on dry-weather tyres, but he did well to finish 11th.

Higgins, who achieved further fame as a stunt driver in the James Bond film, Quantum of Solace, is replaced by team regular, Ben’s father Nick Power for the visit to Lydden.

Legends racing has spread from the US oval tracks, and the cars have an American look, being 5/8-scale replicas of classic US models. Guttercrest Racing use identical Ford Coupe 1937 replicas, with 1250cc Yamaha motorcycle engines.

After four rounds, Ben lies 11th in the table and Nick 28th.

“I’m really looking forward to returning to Lydden,” said Ben Power. “I had a lot of victories there in rallycross and it is a great circuit - hairy hill is my favourite section.”

With identical cars and the fastest drivers having to start at the back of the pack, Legends Racing reputedly features more overtaking in a single race than in a whole season of Formula 1.

It is no surprise the series has been a huge hit with race-goers and TV viewers, and for 2010, Eurosport and Motors TV are showing every round of the series.

Guttercrest Racing is backed by the family-owned aluminium guttering company Guttercrest, based in Oswestry. For 2010, the team has further Welsh support from Cardiff-based PR consultancy Weltch Media, as well as Ripla Designs.
