Mike Abbate won the Legend Car 40 lap feature at the Las Vegas Bullring Saturday night in a very surprising manner when the two race leaders ahead of him crashed with less than two laps remaining in the race. This race was part of the annual Las Vegas Open Comp weekend.
The initial green flag to start this 40 lap feature was an omen of things to come. This race began with a six car pile up in turn one. It was also the first of eight caution flags in the race. Once under green flag conditions Danny Medina emerged as the race leader and set the pace for eight laps before Garrett Archer took the point.
23 laps into the race the fifth yellow flag of the evening surfaced following a very hard crash on the backstretch. The cars belonging to Shawn Snow, Ian Anderson and Brandon Snow were involved in the crash. The race was immediately red flagged when Brandon Snow's engine caught on fire. The driver jumped out of the car and was placed into an ambulance. That was reported to be a precautionary measure because the driver was shaken up but otherwise seemed to be fine.
The race ran an additional two green flag laps when Danny Medina, riding second at the time, spun through turn four following contact from Dallas Montes who was third at the time. When the green flag returned the race was on between Archer and Montes The seventh yellow flag of the race, for a turn two spin out, brought the two race leaders together for a final shoot out.
That anticipated photo finish unravelled two laps later when the two race leaders made contact and crashed in turn four. With only one lap left in the race Abbate was the surprise winner. He was followed by Brecken Snow and Wrango West while Ryan Bird and Brent Scheidemantle completed the top five.
The second place finish of Brecken Snow was quite impressive considering the circumstances the young driver had to endure. On Friday Snow blew an engine during a practice session and had to use a back up car. That meant he had to start this race in 30th. Many believe that had this race been just a little bit longer Snow would have won,
Race winner Abbate picked up $2,000 for his efforts. The event also marked his second consecutive win at the Bullring after winning the Legends portion of Speed Fest the weekend before. It has been a very impressive year for the young driver who earlier began his rook year in Legends.
The youngsters in their small, but very fast, Bandolero cars were also a big part of the Las Vegas Open Comp weekend. In the Bandolero Bandits division Jacob Tilton won the 20 lap feature flag to flag. However a caution flag, with only four laps remaining in the race, set up a charge by Christian Warren that the race winner had to fend off. Austin Blair, Chris Trickle and Brandon Weaver completed the top five.
In the Bandolero Young Guns division Kolleen Dresser capped off what she termed "an amazing year" by winning the 20 lap feature. The young driver will be moving up to the Legend cars in 2010. Michael Morris, Aaron Anderson, Blake Dunkleberger and Trevor Huddleston followed across the line to complete the top five.
